Next time you need to transport fuel in a car, van or any other vehicle where the fuel is inside with you, place the container inside a large garbage bag and close it up. I prefer the heavy duty contractor clean up bags you can find ant Home Depot because they are thicker and bigger but any old lawn/leaf bag will do the trick. You can fit two jugs in one bag and then just twist the bag closed to prevent any fumes from being in your vehicle. Not to mention it wont spill where you may never get the smell out.
