Default storing Jet A

Guys,
I have 5 gals. of Jet A mixed with a quart of oil that I bought late last summer. I haven't finished my project yet although I am ready to test run the engine. I hear fuel wil;l grow algae. How long before this takes place? Is there a test kit available? I'd hate to discard this batch.

No floaties, you're likely to be fine

Burn it down and have fun,

Sean

Commet,

I have had problems with Jet A getting algae and plugging my filters on the turbines. So I switched to kerosene and never had a problem with algae. Plus the odor is less offensive than JetA. You can buy a algaecide made for diesel fuel storage at a truck supply, if you desire. Where I live they sell clear kerosene in bulk for heating stoves this time of year, it's convenient. You might look in your area or go to Home Depot and buy it in five gallon cans.

Regards,

Ken F..........

Thanx for the advice guys! I checked the tank yesterday and saw it was floatie free. I double filtered the pickup line to be sure. Pumped some into a clear jar for closer inspection and gave myself the go-ahead. Another question though....I bought this fuel during the summer - 5 gals. It kept oozing past the cap and had my car smelling to high heaven! > Anyway, when I opened the container last night the fuel level appeared to be about 3/4 full. The cap certainly didn't ooze enough to loose even 1 gt. Does temp have this much effect on volume? The engine ran great! On to the paint booth and final assembly!

Next time you need to transport fuel in a car, van or any other vehicle where the fuel is inside with you, place the container inside a large garbage bag and close it up. I prefer the heavy duty contractor clean up bags you can find ant Home Depot because they are thicker and bigger but any old lawn/leaf bag will do the trick. You can fit two jugs in one bag and then just twist the bag closed to prevent any fumes from being in your vehicle. Not to mention it wont spill where you may never get the smell out.

I second this, I started transporting my fuel container in garbage bags a couple years ago. Good Practice and has saved me some carpet stains a couple of times

hey bro'

since you didn't find any floaties in it, you're likely to be fine. Home Depot Kero is another option as others have already posted.

FYI, I've stored Jet A for up to 8 months at a time in my garage and never had a problem with it.

have fun burnin' dinosaurs

Kerosene is not immune to the algae. The algae problem usually comes from bulk storage tanks where you buy your fuel. In fact you might be more likely to get algae in bulk kerosene than in Jet-A, since the storage tanks for Jet-A are probably kept cleaner than bulk kerosene tanks.
