RE: BME CAP Maniac
Another CAP Maniac takes to the air!
First, check out the tail feathers bracing... this was just too easy, and solid as a rock. A pull-pull rig thru the fuse and control horns on the h-stab... duh, why didn't we think of this before.
The guts all finished, and the vents cut in the cowl.
Then the flight. Only took it up once, a little windy, but she handles like a dream above 1/4 throttle (Saito 100 running RICH). Smooth rollout and steady climb at 1/3 T, then 3 clicks down and two right, she was straight and level. Dropping throttle below 1/4" she rises and floats, had to push down to get it to land. High idle (2800 r's) was all we could get it down to, so it took all the runway to land it, it just kept floating.
Didn't ring it out, but good pull verticle over 1/2" throttle. Rolls at low rate real snappy, on high rates it is a corkscrew from hell. Stalls into the loop at 1/3 throttle, but perfectly square in and out without any rollout. Slow flight is real stable and easy to manage. Not a hind of tip-stall, even at low speeds. This thing flies easier than the trianer at 1/3 throttle.
Didn't try inverted, but looks like the engine is pitched down a bit, so when you chop throttle is pulls up and floats. More flying to be sure of that. Went verticle WOT once, running a bit too rich still, sluggish but kept going. Easy to handle on the ground, doesn't turn on throttle-up much at all.
She's a keeper, no doubt. With some time to really get the feel for it, I think it will be an awesome flier. What little I did try, it behaved. I think 3D will be good, but I'm no pro, so I'm not too sure. I held a hover up high once for a moment, and it seemed real solid.
