Did you tease the glow element out?
A power panel will let you dial the voltage up... A regular battey has a couple tenths more volts than a Nicad..that might be enough....
A friend of mine uses a bic lighter at the tail pipe...he has not burnt himself yet...(although I think a bbq starter would be safer..)
