Default Fuel

I just puchased 5 gallons of kerosene from a local gas station. Home Depot no longer carries this item. There was no identification on pump or tank except dyed kerosene, no K-1 or anything. It looks darker than the stuff I use to buy for heating my garage. What do you guys think? Doug

before you dispose of what may be 5 gallons of perfectly good usable fuel, why not contact your engine manufacturer and ask their opinion?

Dyed kero is ok, what I had was red. I've used it and most anything else identified as kerosene - including k-1, Jet A, the dyed Kero and just paln kerosene (that's all the drum said), also Kleen Strip Kero from Home Depot, etc. If it's identified as kerosene, it'll work. The only difference between K-1 and K-2 is mostly the sulfer content and we're talking pretty small numbers. The additives in Jet A, Jet A-1, JP-8 and JP-5 are larger percentages than the sulfer and they've all been used sucessfuly in our engines. I would use it and the price is hard to beat these days.

I figured guys were using it which is why I was trying to get some response to my thread. Just wondered if there were any long term engine consequences. $1.89/gal ain't bad.

Found a dealer who has K1 clear right around the corner. Added mobil jet oil and was all set up on the bench for first run. Can't get gas to light with ni-starter. What are you using to get the recomended 2 volts per the wren manual? Will I need a power panel with adjustable voltage?

Did you tease the glow element out?
A power panel will let you dial the voltage up... A regular battey has a couple tenths more volts than a Nicad..that might be enough....
A friend of mine uses a bic lighter at the tail pipe...he has not burnt himself yet...(although I think a bbq starter would be safer..)

Nony , your right the ni-cad won't do it but a regular D-cell worked once I let the RPM come down. I never could get the engine above 100 degrees cent. It was right on the edge of fuel ramp but woould not go beyond that and the starter battery finally gave out after trying to push the RPMs up to speed. I think my starter batt. isn't gutsy enough. It's the only one I could find at 9.6 volts but they are AA cells.A six cell car pack is only 7.2 volts so once again I'm a dollar short! Doug

Do you have the onboard starter, or a wand? Also what is the outside temp..if it is cold, the starting gas is reluctant to flow and your just can't get enough of it in the combustion chamber to get the temp up.... I've had that happen a few times, but not to the Wren...

Sounds like you are cooling the engine too much by trying to come up to higher RPMs. I use a car pack and what I do is let the RPMs come down till you hear the pop (just a few thousand RPMs). Then give a few short bursts on the starter, enough that there are no flames but not enough to cool it down. The temp will rise quickly and as soon as the fuel is flowing come up to full RPM on the starter. Within a couple seconds the engine accelerates and jumps quicly from 23,000 to idle. Whole thing only takes about ten seconds tops.

Found a good source of Kero. Sheetz K-1 Kero (gas station). I thought I got some there before when mixing up a smoke brew but wasn't sure. It should smell better than the other stuff. $1.99/gal.

You can mix kero as a smoke fluid?

Yep. Doesn't smell too good and it will attack foam but it works. I mix with transmission fluid or mix with regular smoke fluid to strech it out. It's not quite as good as smoke oil (I use Bennet's), but it's good enough for every day flying.

Just run the stuff, it's not going to hurt anything in the engine. It will either run good or run rough. I have tried it and it worked fine for me.
