Just an idea, have you checked your 2nd & 3rd gear adjustments? When I first ran my Gen it never hit 3rd gear. I tried adjusting it to the point where it got all 'F'd up, second was locked up and at one point third got all screwed up. Then I just took both clutch drums out and did the adjustment, this way you could see the shoes and make sure they're adjusted evenly. Add one more turn to the adjusting screws that Cen recommends. The only hard part is removing the third gear clutch drum located in the trans case. I tried adjusting them assembled on the truck making sure I used the same amount of turns but could never get it right until I took it apart. Now it shifts in 2nd & 3rd all of the time.
