I don't understand why you feel that you owe him something. It was an accident and unless you broke some kind of rule or law why do you feel compelled to give him money? Just because his loss was greater than yours doesn't make you at fault.

I would think that the incident would go as a lesson to you both. At least now the two of you know what to look for before flying.
