What charger were you using? What was the pack capacity and charge rate? As far as "safe charge" circuitry, I could be mistaken but none of the Kokam, Thunder Power, Apogee, etc. packs I have purchased in the last 6 months have had one.

Glad to hear you didn't have an even bigger problem on your hands... that's ugly!
