That hook method is not odd at all. That's exactly how the Sig Somethin' Extra is done and I've even seen some giants done the same way. Personally, I used a plastic cable tie (zip strip) on my Sig SE and pretty much left the wings on all the time. If you don't like that method, you can usually replace the hooks with some small nylon wing bolts thru the inside of the fuse and into the wing root rib. You'll probably have to add some material to tap the bolt into, though. It's not a diffacult modification. I wish I was talking to you in person, because I think I could explain it better if I were.
