Look at the bottom of page 5. Those screws are 2x12mm machine screws. That 'wood' screw is a typo.
(it also says it right on the top of page 30).
Yes, use the back-plates. I cut the screws down with wire-cutters since they were a little long and took off the edges with a Dremel tool. (Most guys just leave em sticking up).
