one other thing to think about if you do indeed get it almost touching... dpeending on the situation if you are about to loose it within inches of the ground you might be better off cutting the throttle than rather saving it and then it snapping crazy and it's crumpled. most planes can handle a 1-3 inch fall on the tail with little to no damage done if on grass. But fly out and catch a wing and you are toast.

I agree with that. I had my tail right in the weeds resting on the ground and lost it and she went inverted, if I hadda gone to full I would have smacked it right in. Instead I chopped the throttle and she dropped in inverted, no damage other than a cracked wingtip.
Ive seen a vid of a 33 or a 40% Ultimate bipe in a hover with its tail no less the 2" from the ground, it deadsticked and fell to the ground on its gear coz he had hios nose slightly down from vert. if he was a few feet higher that thing was toast. When I hover I either do it high enough to pull out, and yes I have tested that theory. Or right DOD so she just flops down with little to no damage.
