Basic can be flown with any plane.
If all he has is those planes they by all means he should use them for the contest.

The basic class is there for people to get their feet wet with competition.
If he gets the impression that he needs a better plane to even try the sequence he's going to be discouraged before he even starts.

Use what you have and give it a shot.
