Default dual conversion micro receivers on older tx

I have an older (about 10 years old) 4 channel FM JR radio, "Max 4". The foamies with brushless motors have sparked my interest to get back into flying (I am a gas boat speed freak at heart). I am trying to keep it kind of low buck, at least for now. Does anybody know if the modern dual conversion receivers, like the Electron 6 will work with this radio? And if they will, do you have to use the Hitec crystals specific to dual conversion in the receiver and/or radio? I have also seen some of the really light and inexpensive GWS receivers in adds. Are these worth a darn? The price seems to be too good to be true.
