I have an older (about 10 years old) 4 channel FM JR radio, "Max 4". The foamies with brushless motors have sparked my interest to get back into flying (I am a gas boat speed freak at heart). I am trying to keep it kind of low buck, at least for now. Does anybody know if the modern dual conversion receivers, like the Electron 6 will work with this radio? And if they will, do you have to use the Hitec crystals specific to dual conversion in the receiver and/or radio? I have also seen some of the really light and inexpensive GWS receivers in adds. Are these worth a darn? The price seems to be too good to be true.

I have quite a few of the FMA dual conv. recievers with no problems. Autoshift high low band. Would work well with your trans. GWS single conv. are prone to glitching with other trans. around. If your flying alone they work fine. I have one but now only use it for bench testing. Berg is probably one of the best for electrics. Small and light, I use them for the smaller planes. It's single conv. but has goodies in it to lock onto your trans. I fly them with other planes in the air with no problems. Hope this helps.

Dual conversion only refers to the filtering the receiver does on the signal INTERNALLY. It has nothing to do with the signal between the transmitter and receiver, which is standard and hasn't changed in decades. There is no such thing as a "dual conversion transmitter" for dual conversion receivers.
Your old FM radio will work fine with any JR-compatible FM receiver, single or dual conversion.
ALWAYS use the crystal that is specified by the manufacturer for that receiver, and only that crystal. That's the crystal it was designed to work with, and any other crystal will most likely offer degraded performance, if it works at all. There's no need to run a JR crystal in the receiver just because you have a JR transmitter. The receiver understands what the JR is saying just fine with its own crystal.
