Default RE: Favorite Trainer

Greetings All,
I have been a club instructor for many years and as such have experienced the spectrum of trainers. Most will get the job done. I prefer the 60 size trainers due to the visibility factor and better stability. That being said my favorite is the Sig LT-40 which will fly well on even an LA-40 (performs a little better on the 46 FX or FA). I had one with an Irvine 53 that does well in rolling circles. It's still flying but after a club member's trainer left the back of his truck onto the highway (remember to secure the planes!). I have another in the box ready to be assembled this coming winter. Even though this will fly on a 40 the wingspan and chord is equivalent to many 60 size planes.

I do recommend the following improvements to an already wonderful plane:
Change the main landing gear to the Du-Bro gear.
Change the nose gear to the Fults double fork (or equivalent).
Add triangular stock under the stab to support it and add some gluing area.
Add triangular stock to the base of the rudder to support it onto the stab.

No matter what you have get to the field and practice.
