The Hobbico Superstar 40 is a GREAT trainer, although it's the only trainer I have ever flown it definitely gets my vote for favorite!

Me and my father both learned on the same Eagle2 with a Skyward 46. That was a great engine, especially considering it was a no name. That Eagle survived 3 crashes, with one being pretty severe.

the desert? i live in the desert . and i have no one around! i liv near death valley. about 190 mi away from new cuyama. i was raised in bakersfield. im sorry too. but i started w/glow engine and it was great so get thatnextstar out and fly it. if its like my h9 alpha it wont cost much to replace the wood if you crack it. go for it and let me know how it goes. you will never forgive yourself if you dont. im 51 myself and always wanted to fly and i just did it . by the way i think the nextstar will fly better.

I went all over the web and to 3 different hobby shops and i came up with a hobbico nexstar. I live out on the desert in Ca. NOt any parks out here. I put my nexstar up and bought a Aero Extreme. I have only had it out one time because of the wind. It was fun the 12 min. it flew. I have been too chicken to get the Nexstar out. Did all of you start with an engine instead of a motor? I thought you had to practice a long time before you were ready for an engine. I am 57 yrs old and hve wanted to fly since I was 10 but i have put it off until now. How much harder is it to fly a Nexstar than the Extreme?

I'm surprised no one mentioned the lil' SIG LT25! I learned with one with a bushing .40 and it was a blast. Very acrobatic and easy to fly and land. And it's a taildragger to boot.

Greetings All,
I have been a club instructor for many years and as such have experienced the spectrum of trainers. Most will get the job done. I prefer the 60 size trainers due to the visibility factor and better stability. That being said my favorite is the Sig LT-40 which will fly well on even an LA-40 (performs a little better on the 46 FX or FA). I had one with an Irvine 53 that does well in rolling circles. It's still flying but after a club member's trainer left the back of his truck onto the highway (remember to secure the planes!). I have another in the box ready to be assembled this coming winter. Even though this will fly on a 40 the wingspan and chord is equivalent to many 60 size planes.

I do recommend the following improvements to an already wonderful plane:
Change the main landing gear to the Du-Bro gear.
Change the nose gear to the Fults double fork (or equivalent).
Add triangular stock under the stab to support it and add some gluing area.
Add triangular stock to the base of the rudder to support it onto the stab.

No matter what you have get to the field and practice.

For me, the LT40 ARF has been the perfect trainer. I've never flown mine with the tricycle gear; I converted it to a taildragger before I even started flying. Dubro nylon main gear, Great Planes 1 1/4" tailwheel assembly, 3.5" Sullivan Skylite main wheels. I"m using the Evolution .46NT engine, presently turning a MAS K series 12x4 prop. Lots of thrust there, the plane has almost unlimited vertical, and is pretty aerobatic (as far as my skills are concerned).

My favorite trainer is the NEXSTAR. Maybe because Its my first plane and I don't know any better!

Lets not forget WM Mach 1, It will do it all and the plus is its tough and cost $69.00.

(I know the thead is kind of old but theres some good info)

I learn to fly gas on a Carl Goldberg Eagle II. It was also my first glow build. A snap to put together and wicked easy to fly.

I still love flying it to this day...

gumhead, That's a sweet looking bird ya built there![sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]

I have a Tower Trainer, & a NexStar. Of the two I like the NexStar the best. It is a little larger & easier to see. It also slows to a crawl a little better I think. Just my opion though.
