I don't think the issue is with siphoning, but it might be that the pump is ready to go south. Can you prime the engine through the carb before trying to light it up? Might help.

You know that if the pump sucks a bubble, it will stop the engine, which is why you need either a Tettra type tank, or use the supplied YS clunk.
