Default RE: AMD Hawk.

ORIGINAL: limeybob

I had my first flight on a .46 powered Hawk at Austin, the same one that Shok had flown, It is underpowered and has to be flown very carefully. This was with 15% nitro, heli fuel.
More Nitro? looking at upgrading to an .82 if I can find a pipe for it.
I flew mine 4 or 5 times at Liberty Bell with a Dynamax and OS .91. That worked very well until the header bolts loosened up and the whole JMP pipe / header / retainer clip assembly shot out the tailpipe yesterday . I did add the wing fences, dunno if it helps or not but the thing is stable as a rock. Really quite trainer like in a way.

I've got an issue or two to resolve other than the pipe. It feels very noseheavy in flight, on #3 I added 2 ounces of tail weight, on #4 I moved the Rx pack back 4". It STILL feels noseheavy. OTOH the way the stab trims out I don't have much up throw, maybe a 1/2" or so. I'm going to pull the thrust tube out and do whatever is needed (including whacking some slots out on the fuse side to let the stab LE's clear) to get 1" of up elevator from where nuetral is at the moment before I move the CG back any more. The takeoff roll was pretty long on pavement with full up applied for quite a while before it rotated into a 20-30 degree climbout. The climb angle was quite good, the roll rate was slow but very safe with the recommended throws, the recommended flap throw does steepen and slow the approach some and there was no discernable trim change on the elevator with flap deployment. Speed was decent, nothing to complain about but it definately isn't a rocket .
