I used regular black monokote. I have a square template I made from 1/8" ply. That's the hardest thing, really, since you have to make sure it's a true square. (if not your checker pattern will go horribly wrong).
I start with a reference line drawn on the base covering using a grease pencil. Once one row of squares is laid you build from that. I lightly tack a few squares both down and across and make sure things line up and then if I need to reposition them they will lift off easy. Once I get it where I like and things look good I firmly iron them down.
Don't get hung up if the corners don't perfectly match. You're never going to get it perfectly right on. If you try then you'll go really crazy. If you need perfection I suggest painting them or buying the pre-made checkerboard rolls from H9.
