How's this for cool?

All hand cut and applied one at a time It won't be hard to tell up from down on this one.

Default So what did you do for the rest of the hour, jbrundt?

Just kidding, man. I know that scheme took a lot of time and patience to do, and it looks terrific. Great job!

Default Tell me how?

I,m currently putting together the same ARF color and everything, and I was wondering how to customize it and I think I found my answer!

How did you cut those perfect squares?

Color and brand of covering?

Any tips on how to do it?

Thanks Dennis

Default Bursting bubbles...

It looks great, nice job and I do mean job.
I guess you boys ain't heard but you can buy the checkerboard covering by the roll now, made by Ultracoat.
Comes in 2 sizes and 3 colors, black & white, red & white and yellow & white.
The H-9 Pizazz and the G.P. Ryan ST both use it.

Dennis,

I used regular black monokote. I have a square template I made from 1/8" ply. That's the hardest thing, really, since you have to make sure it's a true square. (if not your checker pattern will go horribly wrong).

I start with a reference line drawn on the base covering using a grease pencil. Once one row of squares is laid you build from that. I lightly tack a few squares both down and across and make sure things line up and then if I need to reposition them they will lift off easy. Once I get it where I like and things look good I firmly iron them down.

Don't get hung up if the corners don't perfectly match. You're never going to get it perfectly right on. If you try then you'll go really crazy. If you need perfection I suggest painting them or buying the pre-made checkerboard rolls from H9.

hth

Default Hand cut checkerboard

When I do a checkerboard pattern, I tape the covering to a piece of card stock and use a paper cutter. I remove the backing, tape the covering to the card stock and cut strips. Once the strips are all cut to the correct width, I then use a tape measure and mark the length of the squares the same size as the width. I then stack 3 strips, and cut with the paper cutter. Each wack of the cutter produces three perfect squares...

Here is a pic of my SlowPoke that I did using 21st Century fabric.
The checkerboard is not as large of an area as the others have done, but the corners all touch and the pattern lines up on the other side.

I treated the underside of my old Sukhoi's wing to the checker treatment.

No pics. None forthcoming rither as I just barely didn't miss one of the two trees on the landing pattern while coming in deadstick, alas.

Default no bubbles burst here.....

Carlos,

I've seen the pre-printed checkerboard covering from H9. It's OK but I still prefer to do my own

It's half the fun!

Jeff
