Default starter adapter question

I just finished building my run-in bench for my 90sp. Now to get the adapter hooked up on my standard hobbico starter.

I take the cup off my starter to attach the adapter to the shaft and find it won't go on. On the starter shaft is a small pin (does not seem to be able to be removed) that fits in the bottom of the cup to provide additional support to spin the cup.

How is this to be done? The grubs in the adapter will squeeze onto the shaft threads which is not desireable because this pin will not allow the adapter to fully seat on the shaft.

The only thing I can see (maybe) is that the starter is not a "high torque" starter. Would that be a reason?
