The safest thing to do is remove the propeller. That way you don't forget to re-enable the throttle when you're done, and don't end up with a mysterious ESC "failure" when you go to fly the plane two weeks later

Better still, use a 4-cell NiCd or NiMH pack to power the receiver and servos during setup. Leave the motor disconnected completely.
