Assuming you want a plane with an engine versus one with an electric motor:

Before you spend any money or head down a specific path, try to find a flying club in your area and talk to the people there. This site has a club finder that works for all of the US.

Most clubs have instructors to teach you to fly for no additional cost above joining the club. One of the instructors or other members might have a trainer plane for sale at a good price.
