Back in the FSR era there were only two types of engine you could get, ringed or cast iron. Everyone knew that for either of them you just ran them slobbering rich at first and the only danger was a needle that wasn't open enough.

Personally I like to start a new engine with the needle screwed out maybe 3 or 4 turns and the throttle opened enough not to have to worry about idle mix.
