Don't know for sure about the Evolution, because the ignition may have a different timing.
I take it you mean a 27x8 prop? If too small, that may be the reason for running backwards due to lack of flywheel mass.
Instead of flipping fast, try a lazy flip, which will not advance timing before the engine fires and speeds up.
MVVS does not react with better starting to fast flipping, and IMHO starts better when turned over slower. I never did experience backward running. This may well be the case with evolution as well.
