I have flown mode 1 since 1968 also. That includes Bonner, RS Systems, Kraft, ProLine, JR Century 7, ACE, and now Futaba 9VHP and 9ZHP. I have never, never, not once ever bought a mode 1 transmitter. Conversion used to be easy. With the 9V/Z you have to completely disassemble the transmitter.
Tower now offers to sell the 14MZ on mode 1 for a mere $100 US extra. That's really nice of them. It's not like they sell mode 1 all over the world. They have to specially make these mode 1's for the USA!
