It's a good question, a tough one. At some point, SOMEBODY has to have something hanging out, and be taking a risk. I would tell any SELLER to avoid the risk to themselves, and as any BUYER to avoid the risk to themselves.
If it is a really high ticket item, there are escrow services out there.
By the way...here's something to keep in mind. In spite of all this risk, in my experience, 99% of online transactions happen with no problems. Which is a nice commentary on your fellow modellers.
