No, no, no, no no no!!!!!
You are getting some REALLLLLLLY bad advice here!
DO NOT SHIP THE ITEM UNTIL YOU HAVE CASH IN YOUR HAND. Period. Bottom line: if he paypalled you with a credit card, he can do a chargeback on you as long as there are funds in your paypal account.

Can I cancel a payment that I've already sent to someone?
You may only cancel a payment if the Status of the payment is Unclaimed and the recipient has not yet signed up for PayPal and collected the money. Show me (If your payment is Completed and you want to request a refund, please contact the recipient of the payment.)
The following 'Unclaimed' payments may be cancelled:
You sent your payment to an email address the recipient has not yet added to his account. Once the recipient adds the email address to his PayPal account, the payment will be automatically credited to his balance
The recipient has not yet confirmed his email address. For security reasons, PayPal can only credit payments sent to a confirmed email address
As a matter of fact, paypal CAN AND WILL FREEZE YOUR ENTIRE ACCOUNT if he complains of fraud. He could just say "the paint was not as glossy as I expected" and call his CC company. Guess what? The CC company is NOT going to get stuck, and Paypal is not going to get stuck...YOU ARE.
Go with what your original instinct was...ship when you have the cash in your hand.
And NEVER keep substantial amounts of money in a paypal account.
