Here it goes:

In order to disassemble the Tiger 1 tank, you have to first remove both of the tracks. You can push out a pin, but I simply tug on the side/rear end of the track and turn the drive wheels by hand until the tracks come off. Once the tracks are removed, unscrew the long screws (1 in front and two in back), and then take out the six short screws on the sides that were blocked by the tracks before you removed them.

That should allow you to separate the bottom of the tank from the top, but the wires will still be attached to both, so you cannot move the sections very far apart until you disconnect the wires. One wire (single) is the antennae wire, which just pulls apart. The other is a set of wires that plug in to each other with a white connector.

To take the Pershing tank apart, just remove the screws from the bottom without removing the tracks, and disconnect the same wires as the Tiger 1.

Now that the top is basically free from the rest of the tank, look for frayed, broken or loose wires. If everything seems okay and the new batteries do not fix the problem, you may just have to throw up your hands and tell those boys that Mom did everything in her power. I'm not even sure that I could fix the tanks if they were right in front of me, so don't feel bad if you cannot solve this problem.
