RE: detailed engine tuning
Assuming that you have already broken it in and you have the car warmed up:
- Temp at glow plug should be 230-250 for most engines
- Pinching the fuel line should cause the engine to die in 3-5 seconds
- The idle should be set as high as possible without the clutch engaging
I adjust HSN, then LSN, then idle. The LSN and the idle affect each other quite a bit (richening LSN lowers idle, and vice versa) so I have found that order above helps me to tune the engine quickest. After going through, re-check everything to make sure the engine hasn't gone outside the ranges specified above.
EDIT: You should always see smoke during acceleration from low-mid RPMs if your engine is tuned properly.
Another thing if you are getting erratic temperatures, get some sensor safe silicone and seal up the engine backplate, and around the base of the carb. There is no easy way to check for air leaks, so better just to seal the engine up just in case.
Also, if you notice a large difference between full and empty tank temperatures, try running a fuel filter in your pressure line. Simply buy a large fuel filter such as [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHZE1&P=7]this one[/link] and remove the inner filter elements. This will allow fuel that sloshes from a full tank to collect in the reservoir, instead of blocking the pressure line and causing the engine to lean bog from lack of fuel pressure.
