Default detailed engine tuning

First car is 1/8 RTR Gas SHO. (having a riot with it)
Having problem fine tuning motor. Can get it to launch off the line with no high end or vise versa. Certainly there is a fine between.
Is there a web page or good advice on tuning this motor consisting of: idle screw, low end mix and high end mix. Seems pretty basic, but having a heck of a time while keeping temp at desired temp. (using laser temp gage)>

as long as the temperature isn't too far over 240.deg, it should be fine to tune it however you want, a healthy engine is an engine that runs right and how you like it despite the temperature. My uncle has had nitro's since the mid eighties and he never used a temp gage and his ones ran finr for ages, he just tuned it the way he liked it and stuck with it. If you think about it the average engine cost between £90-£150 even if its nakered after a year of having it how you like it, it was still worth while. just my thought on the matter.

I agree with Turnell there, Just tune so the engine feels like its going well ...
A basic guide is to fill tank, run engine till tank is half full
Then tune the idle
then tune the HSN
Then tune the LSN

play around with it for a while eventually the penny will drop and it will all make sense,..
Hope this helps !

Assuming that you have already broken it in and you have the car warmed up:

- Temp at glow plug should be 230-250 for most engines
- Pinching the fuel line should cause the engine to die in 3-5 seconds
- The idle should be set as high as possible without the clutch engaging

I adjust HSN, then LSN, then idle. The LSN and the idle affect each other quite a bit (richening LSN lowers idle, and vice versa) so I have found that order above helps me to tune the engine quickest. After going through, re-check everything to make sure the engine hasn't gone outside the ranges specified above.

EDIT: You should always see smoke during acceleration from low-mid RPMs if your engine is tuned properly.

Another thing if you are getting erratic temperatures, get some sensor safe silicone and seal up the engine backplate, and around the base of the carb. There is no easy way to check for air leaks, so better just to seal the engine up just in case.

Also, if you notice a large difference between full and empty tank temperatures, try running a fuel filter in your pressure line. Simply buy a large fuel filter such as [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHZE1&P=7]this one[/link] and remove the inner filter elements. This will allow fuel that sloshes from a full tank to collect in the reservoir, instead of blocking the pressure line and causing the engine to lean bog from lack of fuel pressure.
