In *old* cars, the ignitionpoints contact the ignitioncoil to ground, in this schematic the transistor will do this.
A other differend is the Voltage, in cars 12 Volt to the coil (but this take a lott off current).
With a high Voltage, the current can/will be lower, so small battery can bu used.
