My wife has never once questioned me about airplanes. I've openly told her what they cost ($50 each... just kidding) and tell her it's my passion... besides her...
She sees the fact that it is clean fun and healthy for my psyche... and certainly beats the bar runners that stop for a few after work and who knows what else.
At least with this hobby I am home half the time building... and at one specific location during good weather... the field.
I get the occasional "ooooh that's pretty" but never any negative questions. I'm fortunate that I have a detached 30x40 building dedicated to my planes, shop and home office so I'm sure that alleviates any problems with decor...
