RE: My new ZN Supremes'
Since I just got mine flying today, I thought I would rekindle this thread.
It came out very light for its size - 9.0 pounds or 4.082 kg.
First impressions are very postitive on this plane. I have 4 trim flights in it now. The most noticable aspect of this plane is how incredibly well it stays locked on a line, and how well the wing stays absolutely put. It is amazing. I felt that my PL Partner and Kyosho Oxalys 50 were both flying really well, but this Supreme is really what you dream about in a pattern plane. I use the same type of hardware, and the exact same JR 9411SA servos on the wings of all my pattern planes, including the Oxalys. So it cannot be the servos that are making the difference. It must be the wing design. I have never flown a plane that stays so absolutely wings level and locked on. Once you set a line, it just stays there. I did the best and longest slow rolls I have ever done with this plane during trim flights. It is remarkable how easy it is to fly. As light as it is, you would think that it would get blown around a lot, but it does not.
I moved the wing back 32 mm than stock, which turned out to be a good idea because I used OS 140 RX engine, and would have been very tail heavy if I did not move it back. It is neither tail or nose heavy. I rolls and knife edges superb, with very little rudder necessary. It gets a lot of lift from the fuse.
I kept the wing tips blunt instead of rounded. Normally I round, but for this plane I think it looks better blunt. I wonder if that has something to do with how well the wing flies.
I did some snaps, even though I do not set the throws for snaps (needs a lot less rudder). It snaps well and stops quickly. I am convinced that you must keep your pattern planes very light. Over 10 pounds for this plane would be too much.
I did a couple things to keep the plane light. I used Ultracote transparent lite covering, which is very thin and light. It probably saved 4 ounces of weight on the flying surfaces. I don't know how well it will hold up, but it looks nice (different), and it is just as visible as opaque covering. I also replaced the stock wing tube with a PBG tube, which save an ounce or two.
Here are some pictures.
