Hey Troy,

I was checking out your pics to get some ideas for my next project, which is a Temptation. I noticed that you have the jaccio regulator on top of your receiver.

I have a 60 size Conquest that I got major radio glitches with the same regulator and a 6v lithium battery. The glitches stopped when I put servo lead between the regulator and the receiver and moved the regulator farther from the receiver. The receiver is a Futaba PCM.

I know you have a lot of flights on the airplane, so it probably hasn't been an issue, but if you do get interference, you might keep that in the back of your mind.

By the way, the Conquest has a Hanno. You gave me some advice on the setup and I have very much enjoyed the motor. I get plenty of powe4r with pretty good transition.

That's funny I have heard that same thing from some other guys running Futaba RX's. I know that Futaba makes a good PCM RX but I'm not sure why it would be an issue on The Futaba and not JR's. But my JR equipment doesn't seem to care.

One thing to consider is the type of regulator. There are a couple types I know of....One is a switching regulator these are constantly changing to accommodate the load. I know they can cause interference issues. Not to say they won't work they just need different care and feeding to not cause problems. I don't have experience with these types. I know there are several brands out there now and I have seen some people have RF issues with Regs. I have never seen or heard of an issue with the Jim Oddino regulators. He sells them under the Jaccio name. Central Hobbies has them. I can only say that I trust Jim's regs and have never had an issue. In fact I trust Jim's expertise and I have never even run any of the other regulators on the market so I really can say much about them...Only what I have seen in helping folks out.

I've done lots of things that are "against" the rules for RF interference issues. I've mounted throttle servos just inches from ignition modules on the big gas models. Never had an issue with the JR RX's. Maybe there is something about the ABC+W windowing that seems to save my rear regarding the "no-no's".....I always check out my radio gear with good range test procedures and I always try to keep my equipment in really good shape.

Glad to hear you Hanno is running good in the Conquest. I always liked the Hanno motor. I had really good luck with my Hanno's...I probably had 3 or 4 of them.

I'm running a Jaccio regulator and NMP LiIon batttery just like Troy.
My Radio gear is all Futaba, 9ZAP and 309DPS receiver with digital servos all around.

Not a single glitch so far. Antenna is located inside the composite fuselage as far as possible from elevator servo leads (servos in stabs) and rudder pull-pull cables (steel wire).

The biggest difference from Troy's setup is that I use a regulator w. built-in switch. So I don't have a separate switch in series with regulator. For storage I just unplug the battery.

I can recommend using Jaccio and NMP batteries, just bear in mind the safety precausions with Lithium batteries.
5.7 V is working like charm with newest line of Futaba digitals, S9154 etc.

When you say glitches are you saying unwanted commands or is it going into Hold? A PCM would go into hold if it were being interfered with. If the surfaces are glitching it suggests the problem is downstream of the decoder. One thing that you should try is to cut out the white wire on the regulator cable. It is there for the purpose of using the DSC but very few people use that anyway. I have heard of a guy getting glitches and solving the problem by removing the wire.

Since I just got mine flying today, I thought I would rekindle this thread.

It came out very light for its size - 9.0 pounds or 4.082 kg.

First impressions are very postitive on this plane. I have 4 trim flights in it now. The most noticable aspect of this plane is how incredibly well it stays locked on a line, and how well the wing stays absolutely put. It is amazing. I felt that my PL Partner and Kyosho Oxalys 50 were both flying really well, but this Supreme is really what you dream about in a pattern plane. I use the same type of hardware, and the exact same JR 9411SA servos on the wings of all my pattern planes, including the Oxalys. So it cannot be the servos that are making the difference. It must be the wing design. I have never flown a plane that stays so absolutely wings level and locked on. Once you set a line, it just stays there. I did the best and longest slow rolls I have ever done with this plane during trim flights. It is remarkable how easy it is to fly. As light as it is, you would think that it would get blown around a lot, but it does not.

I moved the wing back 32 mm than stock, which turned out to be a good idea because I used OS 140 RX engine, and would have been very tail heavy if I did not move it back. It is neither tail or nose heavy. I rolls and knife edges superb, with very little rudder necessary. It gets a lot of lift from the fuse.

I kept the wing tips blunt instead of rounded. Normally I round, but for this plane I think it looks better blunt. I wonder if that has something to do with how well the wing flies.

I did some snaps, even though I do not set the throws for snaps (needs a lot less rudder). It snaps well and stops quickly. I am convinced that you must keep your pattern planes very light. Over 10 pounds for this plane would be too much.

I did a couple things to keep the plane light. I used Ultracote transparent lite covering, which is very thin and light. It probably saved 4 ounces of weight on the flying surfaces. I don't know how well it will hold up, but it looks nice (different), and it is just as visible as opaque covering. I also replaced the stock wing tube with a PBG tube, which save an ounce or two.

Here are some pictures.

David,

What prop and pipe are you using with your RX? I am currently flying an Eclipse with the same engine, standard OS pipe and an APC 17x13 (15% nitro fuel) but I don't like its performance very much.

Hi,

I am very new to the OS. Today I ran a 16.5x12W prop. It is set rich right now, and I am getting 7800 rpm. I am using a Karl Mueller 2.5 inch rise header, 9 3/8 inch from the exhaust flange to entry of the muffler. The muffler is ES 2C140M80. I am using 15% nitro fuel.

I think the 17x13 is probably way too much prop for this engine, from what others are telling me. I am going to go down to a 16x12 or 16x13 to see how it performs. I want to get about 8100 rpm.

A lot of us in the Northeast are using Dave Lockharts' APC 15.75X13 repitched to 15.75X10. Much better downlines than the 2-blade. No problem flying the Masters sequence on 15% nitro fuel in a 10 lb-2 oz Temptation. Will be interesting to see how this setup works with my new Brio at 10 lb-4oz. Pipe is an ES 2C160S90 at about 25-1/4 ish inches.

While on the topic of OS 1.40 RXs, I am running one in my Partner. I have a dual plug head on mine, that I believe is an item that you can get from OS Japan though I know for a fact that it isn't a 3M head. I am running an Asano pipe and header with a Lockhart 3 blade and 20% Coolpower heli. Before I switched them out, I was running a YS 1.60DZ, and I wholeheartedly believe that this is a better motor, at least for my purposes. I didn't play with the YS too much, and while it was a good motor, the OS seems to have more power, although the airframe is lighter than it was with the DZ. The downlines are a little quicker than they were with the YS, but I think in the end, I really like the 2 stroke better. I have 2 OS 1.40FI's that I will be using next, I really would like to see how they compare. Another motor I would love to try would be the 3M Mintor 1.70.

Also, I would also be remiss if I didn't mention this since the thread is really about the Supreme, but that is a beautiful airplane you have there David.

Sounds great! Too bad about the clear canopy, though.

hehe
I dislike (loathe) clear canopies also. As you can see, I did not put anything inside it or paint it. It's a pattern plane, not a china case.

Someone (who must share my view - that real planes are pathetic and compromised) in Europe was making carbon fiber canopies for the Synergy. I didn't hear of anyone doing that for the Supreme, likely because it is a less popular kit.

Adam,

That was Ola Fremming...I dont know if he was selling them or not but he made them for his own models for sure. I think it dropped about 50 grams off the plane.

I think that, regardless of the aesthetics of the plane on the ground which is purely a matter of personal preference, I think that having a painted canopy or at least a darked transparent canopy, aids presentation in the air. With a completely clear canopy it tends to disappear when the plane is in profile. This is especially true as the fuselages get bigger, and hence the canopies get bigger.

Those carbon canopies for the Synergy are lovely! But I tend to prefer the painted on canopies as you end up with the same end result (ok in this case not carbon, but you know what I mean), without the extra weight of a canopy floor, extra filler etc etc.

HI Dave,

Great job with the Supreme! MY OS 140 RX on 20% Nitro turns the Mejzlick 18x12 8100 rpms. The D.L. APC 15.75 3B repitched to 10, turns more than 8200. It is a great motor, just get the S.S. rear bearing for it when needed. Without a doubt, this has been the most consistent engine I've owned. Engine maintenane consists of running the engine out, drop in a little oil, crack a beer, enjoy salsa and chips. Very clean too. The Webra 160 is a plane killer.

It is the basic DEPS setup as described by Troy Newman. They are two individual 0.070 rods supported in the fuse. I use the teflon guides instead of plastic.

Hi Jim,

Wow, the OS is making a lot of power for you. Mine runs nice, and I am happy with it, but I hope to make some tuning adjustments to get a more linear throttle and maybe a little more power. More power is nice, but I won't need it with this plane since it is so light. I plan to use 15% nitro unless I travel to high elevation or a hot place. This plane is for playing with 2 cycle, and economy. I have a brand new 160DZ that I will put in my Partner, and spend on the fuel for it.

Good to hear from you. Hope to see you at a contest again some day. Nats?

Dave
