i agree they both accomplish the same thing the string might be a little harder to do.... not sure ... its a good thing that there is many ways of doing it for people who have different materials lying around

,Devin McGrath

ps another thought might be not to use the depron because it would diminish your knife edge capabilities it gets rid of your verticle surface area... just a thought

Default RE: MINI SHOCKY

This is my effort for my 2nd shocky. Got sick and tired of the tail twist!

C&K 3c-20-400 brushless motor with 8x4.3 slowfly prop
TMM 12A ESC
2xSaturn 4.4g servos
1xHS-55
GWS micro rx
3s1p 830mah (soon to be changed for lighter 640s)

Mods:

Fuz bracing like Shockykids using closed loop wire, and carbon rod.
No undercarriage
pushrod guides made from cut up credit card.

AUW is 180g (6.4 oz) so with the lighter cell should be 165g (5.8oz). Flies superbly!

awsome .. i was thinking about running the fishing line up to the wing around where you did but decided against it for no particular reason ... what was your reasoning for going almost to the leading edge of the wing ? just to make it stronger ?

Let me first start off with saying I am not trying to be an idiot, but what are you guys doing to your Shockys. All the fishing line and carbon this and carbon that, Seriously? I've seen these this fly right out of the box a the ETOC and they fly just fine. The bottom line is that we are flying pieces of foam. If people spent the same amount of time practicing instead of inventing some elaborate bracing method the slight tail twist wouldn't really matter. I meant all of this in good spirit though.

humm well its another factor to the hobby and some of us enjoy it its a completely different aspect of the hole hobby .. if you can make something fly better then why wouldn't you .. about the tail bracing the tail twist did make it harder to do some maneuver's such as coming out of a roll knife edge. there are other things as well but if you don't want to spend the time to make your planes look or fly better then thats up to you but the rest of us somewhat enjoy it

Here are photos of Devin hovering his new lighter AXI 2204/54-powered Shocky.

It appears that once you have mastered hovering, you need to put it to good use somehow, so Devin tries to save a tipped up GWS TigerMoth by pressing it down with the Shocky's rudder.

yeah that worked to....there where so manny people flying that the guy who was flying the tiger moth couldnt get out there to get it. pluss he was at the other end of the gym .. i went over and the wind created from the prop puhed it down .. just had to get above it and give it a little bit more throttle and it pushed it down that was a fun indoor meet greg thanks for taking the pictures.

Devin, thanks for your pics on the fishing line setup. I am flying my first shocky, an edge, and the tail twist is very apparent. I've been considering a fix to this and after looking at your setup I decided that's what I want to do. One question though, do you have a pic of where it ties into the wing. I'm not quite sure how far forward to place that connection. Thanks!

I got my 2204/54 set up in a new Superstar.

It's VERY light!

The problem... I have a new CC Ph 10 speed control with the motor, and a 340 mAh Kokam battery. The motor, speed control and battery all seem to get warm pretty quickly. I'm not used to anything but the battery getting warm with my older Phoenix 10 and my 2208/34. I'm running an APC 8x3.8. Any ideas?

What prop are you using? I'm guessing that you don't have a wattmeter available. You really need to see what the combination is drawing at the style of flying you are used to. I have a similar set up that is working fine for me, but I rarely use full throttle while flying. The 2204 is rated at 6.5A @ 30 seconds. What are your batteries rated at? Do you wait a little after charging before you fly?

My set up is 2S 340, Ph 10, SF 8x4.3SF with the 2204 and it draws around 5 amps. It's a blast. Flew it in a small gym last night.

I'm in Cumberland county, south jersey. It's about half way between Philadelphia and Atlantic City. What county are you in, and where is the arean located?

me and the arean are in Monmouth county. It would be great to find a place where we can have a huge indoor fly in. I hear they are letting Shock Flyers fly in the Lakehurst blimp hangar. Some of my Bro's are looking into membership with the club that flies there.

Hi!
I started out with the AXI 2208/34 imn my Shockflyer but later changed to the smallest AXI motor.
Weight with this is 150g (5 1/2 oz) ready too fly with 2cell 360Li-Po.
Best prop is a 8x4,3 GWS. With a 3cell E-tec 450Li-Po the airplane is a rocket!
Front end of airplane is made sturdier by gluing thin plates of epoxyglass which has been made from 25 g glass fiber cloth.
See pictures.
Regards!

I'll have to find a way to test the current draw. I have a H9 digital servo amp-meter, but I have no idea what the current rating is (not published) so I won't use it. I'll come up with a jerry-rig for my fluke multi-meter.

All the info you were asking for was in my original post.

Most seem to be running a 8 x 4.3... I have a 8x3.8. It SHOULD draw less current. It was getting warm just hovering in the living room. I only hovered twice for about 15 sec each time before the ESC cut off the motor (set to 6.0V, hard cut-off). When I charged the battery (340 Kokam) it took 240 mAh, so it was't fresh. However, the voltage before charge was still 7.3 V... with the 2208/34 I could take it down to 6.3 V before the ESC would kill it. Hopefully the fluke tells me something.

Hi Guys,

Has anyone come up with a slick way to rubber mount the AXI's to these shockies, on the motors that attach
to a stick folks are using surgical tubing, but I haven't thought up a way to adapt that to an AXI without
adding some weight.

Thanks

Having a blast with the Axi /54 on the Superstar, both indoors and out. 7-4 prop on 3s, 11,000 rpm.
