Default Brushless for my ultimate.

I am going to purchase a brushless motor at my LHS on Monday and need advice. I'm flying an E-flite ultimate and though it handles awesome it is a little lacking in the power department. I want more vertical and the power to pull nice round loops. Here's my delimma. I built an IFO for a friend with e-flites 370 brushless and it has tons of power. This is what I'm set on buying but have been eyeing the 400 brushless from e-flite also.I'm afraid it might be a little long but I wouldn't be opposed to cutting some foam if I had to.I also have heard a little bit of negative feedback on the e-flite stuff though my friend has had no trouble.Does anyone else have any ideas. I like the idea of an outrunner also but the ultimate has a stick mount and I'm not sure how I would make it work with an outrunner style. Anyone flying the ultimate with a good system or some good ideas please help me out. I'm looking for the most possible vertical and a little more speed. Thanks!! The Monster

Try the Himax 2812-850 outrunner. It will fit the stick mount of the Ultimate and there's plenty of power. You should use a 10x4.7 or a 11x4.7 but don't use the stock 12x6 prop or you'll probably cook the motor.

Himax 2015 4100kw with a gear box 6:1. That is what I use.

rdmonster, I have the e-flite brushless 400 4200kv on my ultimate and it fits without any trimming of the foam. It has unlimited vertical. It has soo much power that if you go full throttle on a fresh battery it tweeks the fuse so bad the plane flies uncontrollable. Just make sure you use proper throttle management. It is a great combo. I have had about 100 flights with this combo and it is still going strong.

I'll second the HiMax outrunner. Quieter and less weight than the geared setup. I run the HiMax 2812/0650 on my Eflite Ultimate and really like it. I get 20+ minute flights using an 11x4.7 APC SF prop and a 3S 1320mah li-po.

I'd get the HiMax 2812/0850 if I had to do it again though, just a bit more rpm.

You may also want to take a look at a BP21 from balsapr.com
It comes with a stick mount, and should have more than enough power to pull an Ultimate. Best part is...they are $26 bucks....with the mount.

Thanks for all the replies. As soon as I get my ultimate flying again I'n going brushless. Lost the top wing on an outside loop. Sucker ripped off when I dove it to get a little airspeed. The resulting crash ripped the fuse all the way to the cockpit. It didnt just rip off either it actually tore the cabane struts in half. One guy suggested I got too much speed but it didn't seem like In was going to fast. If I have to I'll build a brand new one as the airframe is cheap and it's an awesome bird.
