I've been flying airplanes for 3 years, and I've been self taught on everything. I've been flying 3D for 2 years, and I now do demos for HobbyTownUSA. Maybe I'm just a natural at it...I don't know. But just because you crash doesn't mean you have to stop flying! 3D foamies are meant to be crashed, if you fly all of the time you can expect to get about a month out of an airframe...then you have to put together another. It's all part of 3D flying, and any true 3D foamy pilot will tell you that. If you crash a plane hard enough to break a motor, you were flying a jet not a 3D plane. Or you have a really cheap motor.
You need expo function to fly 3D
Expo is a very personal preference. Some guys like 75% expo, some like 20%. I like 0%...that's right, I don't use expo. I don't use dual rates. And yet I fly full 3D with airplanes that have 60 degrees of throw in the control surfaces. All of these things are personal preferences, you just have to find out what fits you. Eventually I'll probably switch to 20% expo just to make my life a little easier, but I've gone for 2 out of 3 years without any expo or dual rates, so it is not needed.

If you want to have success without crashes for the first time around, the Super Cub would be great. But keep in mind if you go down the 3D road you will crash. Some crash little, some crash every other flight. I dork a plane into the ground about every 2 weeks or so and I try to fly at least 3 times a week, and with a little CA or hot glue everything is back up and ready to go...again. When the plane is more glue than foam, simply crash it as hard as you want for fun, gut it, and send the electronics to a new plane. I've never had a motor or servo go bad on me because of a crash, and I've never had a lipo puff up or go pop. Seriously guys, I don't have 900 posts for nothing.

Thanks for the info. What does Expo mean?I'm sorry, I'm an old timer trying to be a newbie. Many like that Super Cub and I do to but I thought if I had a smaller wingspan I could fly in a smaller yard space. I fly a CX2 Blade heli and working with a CP Pro Blade heli.I fly Air Hogs in my yard and whant to step up.I bought the Slick and the 55 yak 3D from Great Planes but was told I should do a trainer first. With 3D I could finally fly in my yard or for that mater my bath room! Thanks Ron

flyingace i did not say i stopped flying i just stopped with the 3d foamys for now
i got tired of buying them and scratch building my own only to destroy
i still fly my park flyers and my sport planes
building balsa kits is what i enjoy, i learned to fly on a high wing trainer
no way would i have been able to start with a 3d plane
just because you learned quickly does not mean everyone will
i dont see the point of spending hard earned money and time just to crash it into the ground
i was just giving my opinion on not starting with a 3d plane
i do not use cheap motors or batteries
i dont care how good you think you are, crashes will cause damage, not all the time but they will
no offense to darticus but he dosent know what expo or throws are, he is a beginer
he needs flying experience, not experience "dorking" planes into the ground
i stand by my original OPINION 3d is not for beginers

Fly your Cub with your radio it will be a blast. I don't know how big your back yard is but to fly in your bathroom you are going to have to get into a whole new level of R/C. People build planes that can do it, but they are all scratch built plane/electronics.

That Cub should be loads of fun to float around your yard or a park or whatever.

#1 you dont NEED expo to fly 3d its very convinent but i know a guy who learned with no expo and still insists on it that way, i love it personally but you dont absoutely NEED it.
#2 3d planes or aerobatic planes toned down auctually really arent that bad, if thats all ya got why wait to save up for a trainer grab someone who knows how to fly and you can probably learn on it.
#3 if you can get the cub go for it i know that a lot of people have started out there and are still going, it definately gets you into it right!

Thanks for the post. What does expo mean? I have a Yak 55 3D EP and a Slick 3D which is smaller and less intimidating. Is it better to set the control throws to low or high when learning? Maybe the cardboard over the control sticks to limit stick travel, that someone mentioned, might work out good. You think I can try the smaller Slick without trainer experience?

usually i would say the smaller the more unstable but the slick is a super easy plane to fly. expo means that the sticks are not as sensitive around the center.

3D "throws" (the amount that a control surface moves) can be up to usually 60 degrees in either direction from neutral (flat), you will not want this much throw to learn how to fly. However you will need enough throw to get your self out of trouble if you learn to fly with a "3D type" plane. So if you end up tossing your Slick 3D into the wind to train on I would say something like 25 degrees from neutral on all controls would work good.

I know guy's that have learned to fly on this kind of aircraft and they are very good pilot's now, so it's up to you. Just make sure to come back and let us know how your 1st flights went.

I don't know where these links go (never looked) but they cover the edge 540 power setup, hope they help http://www.airfoilz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=195 http://www.airfoilz.com/forum/showth...=1598#post1598

It's funny but a guy I fly with has been flying a slow stick and .50 size heli's at the field and he just started flying an ultra stick. I'm sure your ready for the edge 540, should be a fun change in pace from the floaty stick.

You would get alot of info on that if you posted it as a new post. I have heard by a guy that has them both that the edge 540 is alot more 3D capable, this applys only to the Airfoilz brand planes and not to all in general because the YAK is designed in so many different "semi scale" designs and there are some that kick butt!
