I fly mostly scale but do have a morris su do koi with an fx 46 with 12/3 prop. I just bang it around and have had more fun with this plane than anything I have flown in my 30 years on the sticks. It will fly in calm or 35 mph winds, rain, ect. A real all around fun airplane.
But, time to get serious. I want some high tech flying machine that will still be fun. I have an older Saito 91 on the bench so that might be the power plant.
Would like to hover and all that, never could get the su do koi in a prolonged hover.
I have been reading here about the Funtana and other newer 3d planes. What should I get? Do I need an smaller rx, currently have Jr 950s rx with 10x tx to use. What servos do you guys use?
Lots of advice needed to get on the right track.
Thanks,
paul

Hey, I have a Great Planes u can do .46, and you .91 would be pretty awesome on that, i think it sells for around 160.00. There is also a profile plane that you can build if you like that instead. go to www.ohiomodelplanes.com

I would first identify the charactoristics you're after, such as light wing loading, favorable power to weight ratio and tail authority and then try to find a ship that possesses those attributes. My current fav is a Model Tech excite 90 with an OS FX 91.

Paul, check out the H-9 Seagull Razzel, it's a perfect match w/your engine and hovers steady eddy with a apc 14X4 W..add a couple washers for right thrust..at a $155.00 retail (map) it's a steal.

Go for the Kangke Fun 50. It says a .72 is awesome in it but I bet a .91 is even better. Joe Hunt from DOD is setting one up with a .91, Im waiting on that flight report.

The Funtana is a great model in my opinion. I have a lowly os 46FX on mine and it isn't enough. A few people have pur Saito 100's on the front and this apparently gives good performance and someare reporting good results with a 72 so I would imagine that your 91 would be spot on.
I'm no flying ace myself, but our local hot shot put it through it's paces and it's pretty impresive.
On a slighly diferent tack, if you want a model that will do anything I can recomend the Weston UK Cougar 2000. It can be bought complete with their own tuned engine and thottle pipe, and is relitively cheap. It takes all standard radio gear. It dos mostmoves well. The only thing it isn't too good at is knife edge stuff. If you want something to learn ohoverand prop hang then his is a classic, well at least here in the UK where the options are a little more limited. The only reason I divered from the oiginal is that I haveound this model to be really enjoyable as a do anything hack, and to me planes like the Funtana look so nice I tend not to take so many risks.
Lie AeroDave says it all dpends on what charicteristics you want, do you care what it looks like, what size it is (by the way the 36 on the front of he cougar seems to be balemic as after 15 minutes of flight there is always loads of juice left in the small(10oz is) tank) what mov you wan to learn.
Good luck which ever way you go.

As long as the 46fx is a good one, just take it off the su do and build yourself a morris sledge or maybe an ohiomodels edge FF. There arent any better all around 3d fun fly planes than that. You do not want a funtana IMO(I sold mine-dissapointed). The u can do is fine for hovering but high alpha KE abilities arent all that good. I would go with a flip 3d if you want something more scalish. Oh and be careful paul, Those warbird guys dont like hanging anywhere near the runway

Hey, I am a warbird guy
. I like the Morris for it's ability to fly no matter what weather and it's speed envelope. I am not good at hovering yet, much more practice is needed but I have very little patients so maybe never will learn that art.
Been thinking of taking the morris su do koi apart and stretching the fuse a bit after the wing, shorting the nose a bit, adding my 91 Satio and see what happens.
I will say on the Morris the 46 has very fast unlimitied vertical. I love to take off in a foot, point the nose up and give everyone an eye test
The point of this was to see what was new, high tech, and fun and maybe go for it. The morris plane is getting very tired and worn looking after hunderds of flights and one whack into the runway after someone turned on with my freq. But it lives and gives!

Smallfly.
The FX is brand new. Done about 10 tanks now. The trouble is I know nothing of e models that you mention, I don't hink they've graced our shores.
The Funtana is the H9 model and I o think it's a good kit, although I'm no ace pilot.
Maybe have alook at some of he vids posted on some of he Funtana thread and Judge for youself.
Here's hoping for some good flying weather this weekend.

Your Su-Do-Koi should hover just fine You might be overloading the FX with a 12/3. Most people I know are using an APC 11.5-4 people are also using the APC 12.25-3.75 prop, but I feel that it does not rev up as fast as needed to get you out of a bad situation.
Next you will have to move the CG as far back as you can comfortably stand it that will help with hover and harrier stability.
Also Max out the control throw to at least 45 Deg. Use exponential to soften the center to your preference.
Here is the hard part the closer you are the easier it is to see subtle changes and correct them. It is far easier to make many small corrections than to make giant inputs. If I try to hover high in the air or 50 feet away it is more difficult for me but right in your face is easier.
These are my opinions.
BTW the morris sledge and the ohio models edge 540 are EXCELLENT flyers if built light.

I agree with lomcevak. Seeing as your Sud is old and a little beat, it would make a perfect plane to learn to hover on. As long as your CG is far enough back (a nose heavy Morris plane never flew right for me), try some 3D. You can check out my articles for learning 3D with a funfly plane on my website (http://members.cirelle.net/codyspage) for some tips. Once you're good at 3D with the Sud, move up to something a little newer, like the Funtana or Flip.
