Check out www.spad.org The spa3d is a great low cost way to learn 3d. This plane is the most fun I've had flying R/C. The spad site has all the info you need to build a Spa3d. Good luck.

Well, I guess technically anything's possible, but to set up a 40 size trainer for 3D (as an example), you'd have to put say a 91 two stroke in it, remove all the dihedral (and probably remove a couple of bays from the wings), then remove all the control surfaces and replace them with new ones that are about three times as big. Lastly, as far as I can think, would be moving the CG back to about 50% MAC.

Dennis,
You forgot to mention glueing a second flat bottom wing upside down to get a symetrical airfoil.

Hey, who says a 3D plane has to have a symmetrical wing? It doesn't even have to have a thick wing. True, most or all do have semi or fully symmetrical wings, and most of them have rather thick wings as well, but that does not mean it has to be that way. I read on this forum some time ago, that many thin wings have better stall characteristics than thick wings, (softer stalls) also the all important factor is actually the shape of the leading edge, not the thickness of the wing. Most wings are made thick, either to house the electronics better, or because they make a stronger wing without adding weight or expense (carbon). Second, most wings are symmetrical, (makes them thicker and makes them fly well inverted) but a flat bottom airfoil is actually a hoot. High alpha flight is so different depending on the planes orientation, that it's very intertaining, especially to the pilot, almost like the fiirst 20-?? flights with a Morris Hobbies Spinsation, you find new and funky things to do with the plane.
I did like the one about glueing a second wing to the bottom though, put a smile on my face.

Hey Jens,
Remember me flying my flat winged SPA3D (The Flying Turd) doing harriers underneath your giant Cub at Whittier this summer?

Im flying a .40 sized 3D plane now with NO airfoil, just a flat wing sanded to a point. It will out 3D my Laser3D and the UCD's that I have flown. It hovers very well, not as easy as a SPAD3D (nor is it crash proof), but close. If you venture outside of hovering it will blow the spad3d's socks off with its Super high alpha walking pace knife edges, its blenders, torque rolls, waterfalls, you name it . You can make any airplane 3D with the right set up and (the most important thing) the right pilot. I have a video of Jess Rozman torque rolling the heck out of a Spad Cub just a few feet off of the ground.
