Default The Twist Rocks!!!!

I Have flown my twist for two days and I love it. It seems like a crime to have this much fun for $99. My only complaint is that my Magnum .46 doesn't quite cut it. Maybe a hot .50 (o.s. or enya) or I'm sure a YS .63 would do the job. I flew today in 15-25 m.p.h. wind and had a ball. (no kidding!!!) BIG FAT WING!!!! My options were limited in that much wind, but I thoughroughly enjoyed hanging it in the wind - kind of like a stationary harrier - and doing two or three rolls and ending up right where I started. I then made about my prettiest landing ever. I would highly reccomend this plane! I used the reccomended throws for low, high and 3-d and used 0%, 35% and 55% for expo respectively. I would advise landing with some power on with an aft cg. I have mine just foreward of the aft position (5") and she will nose up pretty hard if you try to float her in, not that it's hard to handle. In fact, thats about the best way to enter a Harrier with this bird. I would give this plane, out of five:

Value: 6
Quality of kit: 4.5
Performance: 5
appearance: 4.5

Another bonus is that the plane fits completely in the back seat of my VW jetta!!!

My one complaint -- This is my second Hangar 9 arf. my first was a Funtana. I won't get into the problems I had with it but there were some were problems with the wing fit. The twist gave me four pieces of 2-56 threaded wire of random sizes that were too short for their spot. The motor mount screws were supposed to be 3/4" and two were 1/2". HUH? I think they need to tighten up their Q.C. at the factory.

P-51 may try for 4 1/2 to 4 3/4 on CG mine flew great, but I could really notice it go tail heavy as the fuel tank got low at 4 7/8 CG. Comming in on landing with no fuel and 15 mph winds the nose really wants to stay high. If using a 46 fx and going buy the book you will need 2 oz of lead way out on the cheeks, only one problem with that was when I needed to adjust my low speed needle I had to drill thru the lead. Since Hangar 9 did not include a spinner you might want to use one of the brass heavy hub spinners, but out that far on the nose you will only need around an ounce IMO. If you use a plastic spinner go with a DU-BRO 2 1/2 yellow, its the closest color match to the covering. I consider myself still a newbe to R/C and this is my first low wing plane, with some expo on transmitter this plane was very easy for me to both fly and build. It floats in as good as my trainer does and with time and more surface throws I will learn some 3D as well.

I had a great weekend with my Twist. My OS 50 hadn't came in yet, so i put my super tiger 45 on. It Flew like a dream. I also had two engine bolts at 3/4" and two at 1/2". And my wing bolt also didn't hold. I had to send the wing back because of broken ribs inside the ultra coat. But even still I think it was a bargin at $98.00.
I had my CG at 4 3/4" and it really did want to jump off the runway on landing.

Great plane, can't wait till Sunday.

I'm building my Twist right now and the control rods in the kit are all the wrong sizes. Other than that the kit is pretty nice though. Looks like it should be a good flyer too. If it ever stops raining I might be able to find out...

How much cutting will the dubro require to fit an APC 12.25x3.75? My 2.75 tru-turn won't slots won't fit it, and I don't feel like cutting on the aluminum at this point.

P-51 Not sure on the 12.25 prop but I did have to trim approx. 1/8" from the hub on both leading and trailing edges. That is for a APC 11x5 prop, so I'm assuming you might need even more for your prop. I'm wondering if a 2 3/4 spinner would come with larger openings.

Today was my first 4 flights for my new Twist! Awsome performance! I'm very impressed with its capabilities. I have an OS .50 SX with APC 12.25 X 3.75 prop. It's got unlimited verticle and hovers between 1/4 and 1/2 stick! Low and high rates are great. Next trip to field will be with 3D rates. Plenty of power!
True Turn has a new aluiminum spinner made for those wide props. No trimming required It's a 2 1/4 inch spinner. CG is currently at 4 3/4" back. Will move back to 5" next trip! Fantastic plane for $99.00

Well, got mine ready to fly, but the weather didn't cooperate. It has an OS 50 sx on the front with a tru-turn spinner and 11x7 APC (12x4 wouldn't fit my spinner), and 4 cell 1450 NiMH pack over the tank against the firewall. No extra weight needed for balance. The balance goes nose down at 4 9/16 and tail down at 4 1/2. I may not get to fly it for two weeks now (going to top gun this weekend), but am looking forward to it from everyones reports here!

Loops were nice and tight. Knife edge coupled badly in both directions, controllable, but you really have to work the sticks. Not very comfortable. It almost lands itself. Nice and floaty.

Glad I'm not the only one to notice the coupling issue.

I FINALLY got to fly my twist yesterday. Put 5 flights on it. It is set up with an abused OS 50sx turning an APX 11x7. These were the engines first flights after getting planted a foot deep in mud last year during the demise of my Somthin' Extra. The engine wasn't quite putting out the power it used to, but some adjusting will get it close, I just didn't feel like doing that yesterday because I wanted to FLY!

ANYWAY...the balance was set to the middle of the recommended range (4 1/2"). In my opinion, this is WAY nose heavy. It flew straight and level with no trim needed. Inverted flight required holding some elevator to maintain level. Applying rudder, in either direction, resulted in a severe nose pitching toward the gear.

I tried to get the thing into a flat spin, but it just wouldn't do it, on either low or high rates. In fact, this part of why I think it very nose heavy with the balance in the middle of the range...since the spins were basically almost straight down nose attitude.

I will move the balance back and see what happens.

I think it will likely hover nicely, but I had some trouble last night due to engine power (remember the mud?) and the coupling issue. It did, however, harrier nicely!

I think it will make a nice funfly plane, but so far I think I like the Sig SE better...time will tell.

This is the best inverted fly spinning thing it ever was.....
Some of you guys might want to try the Dubro prop nut, they even come in colors, and don't have to cut out for different size props...

Have fun.
