Default What is it about this hobby?

What is it about this hobby that makes it so addicting?I'm in the shop till 2:30am,back at it at 9:00am,just too finish planes I just have to fly today. We're at the feild at 1:00pm,it's 95 degrees,no breeze, bright sunshine,I'm putting the finishing touches on my son's plane. We've got five airplanes in the van,a ton of support equipment. We've been flying, fixing, and helping all day, with no regard to the 98% humidity and 95degree heat. It's now 7:00pm,we're cleaning planes, reloading the van, dripping sweat, completely exhausted, it's now 7:45,and I'm thinking of excuses to tell my wife why we"just had too stay out there so long",and the first question out of my 7 year old son,who is now flying solo, and my 5 year old son,who is on the buddy cord is "when are we flying again?"It's now 10:00pm,the van is unloaded, everything put back in it's place, and the first thing I do is get on RCU to read about model airpanes.Another day off has passed, the grass didn't get cut,the garage didn't get cleaned, the cars didn't get washed and all I can think of is "What a great day of flying".I have been in a lot of hobbies over the years, from drag racing, high performance jet skis, model railroads, dirt bikes, and the list goes on,but none have grabbed me like this one has,i"ts almost like I just can't get enough! What is it abou this hobby?
Mike.

You just have to admit that you LOVE the hobby.

There is no need to try to find a big explanation to it.

Mike.....ya know,...It took me a while to do it, but I finally hired gardeners for the yards, get the neighbor kid to wash the car for 5$to10$, and got the wife a new computer, so I could have one all to myself, strictly for my internetRC stuff. So I don't have to feel bad when the yards don't get done...heck I just make sure the sprinklers work. I don't even think about grass anymore. I get the yards done for about the price of a "gallon of fuel a week". The only car I have to worry about is the wife's ride, as for my little truck,,,I just clean windows, wisk broom the inside...done. It hauls planes great, and I don't have to be concerned about the dust from flying field.
You've only just begun it sounds like, and it's so cool to see someone else that is really enjoying the hobby to that degree. And.....your spending time with your kids, and teaching them a craft that could potentially last them a life time.
Just don't let burn-out set in, I experience it occasionally, and it's tough forcing myself to go build/fly. Once I do though, it takes me 5 seconds to know why I do it. ITS FUN>>>

I too hired a neighborhood kid to cut my grass last summer,he saw my planes and wanted to come out with me.I ended up teaching him to fly,and now's he's hooked and I'm back cutting my grass.I've been flying about five years now and don't see the end in sight. What a great hobby! When my 7 year old put his hand up for a high five yesterday and said I had a great day of flying,(no crashes)it made it that much better.

My oldest is 4 and she really loves to go to the field, or shop, or where ever the planes are. I got her a trainer box, hooked an antina to it (no batt or XTAL) and she diggs it!!! I am planning to start teaching her to fly this summer. My boy (1yr old) already says "tain" and points to the sky. When my dad was alive, he was a PanAm pilot, this would really make him proud. I love planes, my kids, and fresh air........gee everything in one...I love it!!

Default reason

I think this addiction has something to do with an inbalance in nurotransmitters!

Seriously, I have been addicted for many years now and will experience burnout sometimes. I have found that true long term enjoyment of this hobby comes through moderation, much like life.

Now I'm going back to the shop I have three planes to finish!

I have been around this hobby my entire life. One of the earliest things that I can remember is sitting on my Dads work bench poking holes in his kaos. I got a spanking. Now that I think about it, most of my early spankings were R/C related.
To me this is more that a hobby. It is away of life! My wife, well she dose not quite get it, but she sees how much I enjoy it and leaves me be.
Unfortunately the thrill of the first hook is lost on me. I do however love the look I get from a grown man of 55 when I first get him on the buddy box. He looks and feels like a kid again.
I'm 32 now and still flying every chance I get. I try to get almost every person that I meet out to the field so that I can share this wonderful Hobby. Some think I waist my money, Others are flying more than me now!

Later, Scott

I too have been addicted to this hobby for 11 years.
But about 12 months ago ,for some reason I lost interest.
I began to fell guilty about all the time I had spent building and at
the field. This time I thought would have been better spent with my two young children. So,I started selling most of what I had aculmulated over the past eleven years.
But,after some time went by, I began to notice that my relationship with my family actually deterorated instead of improving. It seems that when I was active in the hobby was the time I was most happy. And this was reflected back to my loved ones. So now; they encurage me to go flying. (Maybe they just want me out of the house)
Whatever the reason,it is a hobby that I found hard to give up.
Just my two cents worth.

Johnny, I know what you mean here, as I've had some of the guilties before. During that time, I just took breaks, and regrouped. Always seemed to come back stronger and better for it though. I've taken as much as 3yrs(no more then that though), off of the hobby, and have done the break thing 3 or 4 times through my hobby career(about 30yrs now).
I've found the hobby gives me something to think about during idle times, has helped me immensely with patience(gotta have it), and keeps me occupied, as much or as little as I want.
I'm fortunate my family is supportive, and let's me "hobby" at will, and knows where to find me. Also knows I will drop what I'm doing if they need me(unless I've mixed epoxy, and am joining wings, or something like that). You know what I mean.
I think we all need something we do, to call our own. I do this RC thing for ME! And yes, I can be rather selfish with it(not in a bad sort of way), I do share it quite a bit, but selfish to the point that I don't do it for anyone else. If I do or share something, it's because I want to, not because I have too. And if you can't tell, I don't feel guilty whatsoever anymore. Oh well...I'm going flying, ...why? Because I want too, and I'm going to go see all my friends today, which are a big part of me now. That's a whole other reason I do the club thing. Take care all.

WOW--Sorry, my humor was not defined-My point is that I thought it was a requirement to be this way --truth is---I been doing this for almost 12 years now--got to have almost every new thing that comes out-must have all of the mags-I am at the point that as I look at the "planes for sale " and "Giant Scale for sale" forum EVERY NIGHT, I have owned most of them-in other words I am still saturated by the facination of planes-it was 94 degrees here today and yes I was at the field--muffler vibrated loose on the first flight and I stilled stayed untill 6 PM--go figure--I can't explain it! :rainfro:
