Default Back Yard 3D'er

My dad just recieved a GWS slowstick to fly in the backyard.. I need somthing to fly with him but don't want A slowstick as it can't do any aerobatics<until he learns to fly well enough i can modify it> I need a FOAM 3d'er. I read the post about Foamy websites and all the stuff seems to be a bit expensive... I like the Shockflyers but really haven't heard so much about them on this forum<maybe i missed it> Also I picked up an issue of "Back Yard Flyer" and there is a really nice Sukhoi From 3D RC PLANES. It's specs are:

WS:33inches
Length:32 inches
Weight:11 oz.
Motor required:GWS 350-C

The Fuse and wings are ade of EPP foam and the tail feathers and ailerons are made of Depron.. Airframe Only $59... What are you're opinions on this? Would it be cheaper to buy this or the Shockflyer<Edge Version>

I know it's new but I know some of you recieve stuff before others so if any one has any flight experience with the Sukhoi or the Edge 540 shockflyer any info much appreciated.

Edit I just read the power set that comes with the shock flyer recomends Li-po's... we already have other batts Nimh and Nicd and a quick charger for the can I use theses cells if I were to get a shock flyer?

Thanks In Advance

I would get the shockflyer and upgrade to lipos. It will be a little expensive but you dont have to buy top dollar chargers and stuff. Just get a beginner type lipo charger and 2 battery packs. Go talk to the guys at your local club and LHS about this stuff.

If you are going to use a brush or can motor you aint gonna get much 3D, if you are lucky a prophang but the pullout will be useless and also, even if you get that when put under 3D loads these motors burn out alot, try to get together some cash and go brushless.

hpe this helps

Firstly stay as far as possible away from Nicads and Nimhs. They are absolutely rubbish on these planes. Only use these if you want a crap power to weight ratio and like flying in circles for about 1 minute duration.
If you look around you can find quite cheap Lipo chargers, and prices of both these and the batteries themselves are coming down.

You also want to put a brushless motor on it. The power and duration and the long life of the brushless stuff is far better than the horrible geared brushed motors. It will be well worth the extra initial cost

The shockflyer is a tried and tested design, which flies superbly. I have flown all three types and own the edge. they are the best 3D planes i have flown so far, and absolutely great fun. I don't know what this sukhoi flies like, but i can vouch for the shockflyer.

Go to www.horizonhobby.com and check out what you need to set up a good EPP 3D plane.

Park 370 brushless motor $47.99

Castle Creations Phoenix 25 ESC $67.99

Kokam LiPoly 3Cell 1500 mah battery $37.99

Celectra 1-3 cell LiPoly charger $44.99

_________

This is just an example of what you would need to start into setting up a plane like you describe. Brands and battery capacities can be changed to your liking of course. Just lending a hand!

i have the sukoui from 3drcplanes and it flies great, they have come out with a new design that does knife edge with no coupling! it torqe rolls with one hand, you can ask for big ailerons or the regular. mine has the big ailerons and they are great! i'm on the front page so you can see the big ailerons for your self. it does all the 3d you can do and more. the sukoui cost a little more but i have flown the shockflyer and i think the sukoui is better all around.

For something like the Shockflyer, brushless is not a necessity. However, with the brushed setup, Lithiums are.

Here is a short video to give you an idea of the performance on the stock 370 motor and a 3S 830 apogee. Just make sure if you use a deans antenna it is screwed it well. Mine was not (you will see it fall halfway through) and I lost responsivness and it took a nose dive when it got too close

Thanks,
Yeah it will. It is not ballistic as brushless would give you, but it pulls out at a good clip. I decided to get back to the basics with this plane since I normally run brushless on every plane I have. I forgot how good a brushed motor can actually perform.

You are normally a brushless guy, huh? What kind of brushless motor would you recommend? Do you think the E-Flite Park 370 - 4100 would be worth it?

I've burned out too many brushed motors in my days...of course I was running 9.6 volts to a 300 on my Slow Stick too!

Yeah, I run everything from Axi's 28XX's to Hacker C50's. Yes that motor would do well. You would want to gear it at 6.6:1 swinging an 11X8 or 12X6 on a 3S Lithium pack.

I will probably get about 40-50 flights out of this motor before it needs to be changed. I have a ton of the can brushed motors, so it isnt an issue.

Cool !!! I'm looking at getting my first brushless setup and I'm trying to get as much info on them as I can.
