Got a Dave Patrich Edge 540 and am probably going to use a petrol instead of my Moki 1.80 because of fuel costs and mess. Anyone got any advice on which petrol 50 to get? Competition is between DA, BME and ZDZ. Kinda like the look of the DA, looks like it was done right but lets hear your views. Ta.

If you want to 3d go for the Moki 1.80 for the lighter wieght, intern giving you a lighter wing loading.. Other wise go for a ZDZ 40 or similar.. I read a review in a magazine and they built 2.. one with the moki and one with the ZDZ 40.. and they stated the above.. I have no personal experience with the model though.. if you want let me know and ill go on top of my toilet and let you know what magazine/issue it was..
Do a search and I am sure there is a good thread on this plane and you can ask the guys who are flying them.. theyll let you know what motor to use..

I have a ZDZ 50 on mine. I love it !! The ZDZ has great throttle rsponse. The DA wich my freind has the same plane with the DA runs well also just doesnt have the throttle reponse of the ZDZ.
If i was to do over again i would defentaly buy another ZDZ. The biggest thing i would say is watch your wieght. The plane will get heavy fast and it doesnt harrier very well if it is heavy.
As stated above in that magazine article harrier was better with the moki but even the guy in the article said he would rather have the gas cause it provided more power !

Pic of a very used-but but very sweet running -ZDZ 40 on a DP Edge. Did have a ZDZ 50 NG but need that engine for another project and picked up the 40 from a flying bud. With the 50 everything is unlimited. With the 40 you will have to be choose props wisely to have decent pull out from a hover but to me every thing else is just fine. You won't save any weight by going to the 40 over the 50 since it only weighs about 4-5 oz less. To me the plane is more fun to fly with the 40, but you will give up some vertical performance, but thats not a big deal with the DP.

I'd go with a BME 50. It's American made just like the DA but cheaper and a little lighter and you'll still have unlimited vertical. Just my 2 cents...

I totally agree. The BME is quite a bit lighter actually. Closer to the weight of the moki than any of the other engines. Plus it makes nearly just as much power as any ofthe other 50s out there. For 1/4 scale the BME would be the best.

BME is still around, in fact, the president of our flying club knows the owner. China Springs, TX is about an hour and half from College Station and my high school, Hillsboro High School, was in the same district as China Springs at one time for a matter of fact. Anyways, the website is bmeengine.com. You may have to try calling them.

The only thing I don't like about the BME is the amount of unsupported crankshaft. Apart from that it seems cool despite no reed valve. Weight with basic silencer is advertised as 3.3 pounds. Best of the bunch as far as I can see. My Moki 1.80 weighs 3 lbs with BCM muffler and getting near 3.5 with the radial mount.

Wowbanggar! I am a DA guy. I have 2 DA50s they are hands down the best petrol engine I have owne. I have a BME44 have had a few other too. The support is number 1. My DA50s have more power than any 50 at my field. Hands down. I got one on a KS 1060 pipe pulling my comp-arf 2.3 extra 330 and it has unlimited vertical, albiet scale performance at 19lbs 6 oz. The DA engines are in another class than the others. If I had to try another brand I might try 3W. IME there is no better designed and manufactured engine on the market. IME!

im just finishing my 2.3m extra. the DA 50 comes with red engine standoffs that are 14mm to short, the book says add washers but thats abot 60 washers!! with all the vibration from a single pot motor this does not apear right. How did you mount your motor?

TBB, you got the wrong standoffs!~(. I got the longest that DA sells with the DA50 at they are perfect. Is there a distributer there you can exchange them with? You going to run the canister or the tuned pipe?

I have a friend in Merseyside-- who has the ZDZ 40 on a plane I built - a bit larger but - if you ever go there - ask among the flyers for John or Stephen Simm- they can show you what power levels and sound to expect.
I have built/flown the DP EDGE- the 40 is plenty of power -and the model needs the 2.75 lb engine to balance.
