Greetings All,
I'm having some difficulties deciding which engine to put in my edge. I have an Aeroworks 90 sized Ede 540 that weighs in at about 8.75 lbs. I live in North eastern Nevada and I fly at approx 6000 elevation. I've read a lot about this plane and everyone was putting on anything from a OS 91FX to a 1.08FSR and on the Stroker side anything from a Saito 100 to a YS 120. I bought a Saito FA-100 for it but I'm affraid in my elevation it won't have the power I'm looking for to do 3D. I saw an Irvine 1.50 MK11 at my LHS but I'm affraid that will be a little overkill. My quetion to you all is this. I'm thinking of 3 different engines with pitts style mufflers of course. They are the following:
1. OS 1.08 FSR
2. Webra 1.20
3. Moki 1.35
Keep in mind, I want to try to keep this plane under 10 LBS. Your input would be greatful and much appreciated.. Thanks for reading,
Rich

Saito 120, 150, 180? All the same physical size except a 1mm difference in height between each step up.
YS 120, 140DZ? Word is, YS engines have the most power of any engine in the same size class.
I am putting a Saito 120 in a Vectorflight Edge 540 66" WS at 300' elevation. VF specs claim the plane should come out to 8-9lbs. I am hoping it will have enough power to hover.

Primodus,
I understand that YS's are suppose to be the best for power, problem is that you can't get one right now and they are hella $$$. I'm thinking about a 150 saito, but I don't know if that will be enough in 6000 ft of elevation.
Just my 2 cents here, but I would think twice about VF (or do your homework about the airframe). My brother got one and tried to make it as light as possible. He said it was " A Brick ". He flew it with a Saito 120 FA on it and it wouldn't 3D for anything. But then again the elevation is killing us...

Had the same plane with a Saito 100 here in New Mexico (4400')...and it barely had enough power to get out of it's own way. Forget 3D...in fact, forget aerobatic's period!
Then put a Saito 180....and that was the ticket. It was a fun plane then...
Just my opinion...high altitude really kills power.

That's why after considering what I'm up against, I'm thinking of putting a Saito 150 or even 180 on my 60/90 Aeroworks Edge. People have been saying I'm crazy but, elevation kills as you know... Now all I gotta do is figure out how to mount it. I think I'm gonna have to really modify the firewall for that big of an engine....

Mine bolted right up, using a Great Planes mount. The firewall on mine held up fairly well. I did glue in extra triangle stock to the inside of mine...

I have that same plane, I love it. So much so, I bought a second one because I dumb thumbed the first one into the ground on a dead stick. I put a magnum 120 in mine and it flew like it was on rails. Granted Im not up high like you are, but I am in East Texas where the humidity will play havoc on an engine. I cant wait to get the second one finished up and in the air.
