I've got my wing covered and hinged, and I'll be covering the fuselage tonight. I have some questions before I assemble it.
I have an Irvine .53 and a YS .63 available. I'm leaning towards the YS, because I want Yo-Yo power! What have some of you have ended up with for a total weight? If I can get it under 5 pounds the Irvine should be okay.
I'm planning on HS-225MG on ailerons, and HS-225BB in the tail for elevators. I have an HS-77 for the rudder on pull-pull, and an HS-81 for throttle. I've heard about some guys having gear problems with the HS-225. Will I be okay if I use proper throttle management?
Is a rearward CG attainable without adding lead?
I can't wait to fly this thing! The wing is huge.
Thanks!
Chuck

IL,
I'm flying a Diablotin Super with regular 225bb's no metal gears, with only 1 on elevator (no split elevator). If you watch your speed I don't think you will have any problem IMO. This is a very similar airplane to the Laser 3D. Tom

Before you cover the elevator add some gussets to the corners and at the tip where the counter weight portion gos around the end of the stab.
I have seen two of them brake during slow flight on high rate.
Just my 2 cents

Okay, good. I'll watch the speed.
I built the elevators as per plans, but then decided that they were too flimsy. I rebuilt them using 3/8" balsa with extra gussets. Hope that helps!
Thanks!

I've got a Saito 72 on it and a rear mounted rudder servo so the plane balances perfectly. The rudder servo is located 3" to the rear of the elevator servoes on the bottom of the fuse and uses pull-pull cables.
An awesome plane.

Do you have standard sized servos in the tail on elevators?
If so, I better put my rudder servo in the tail then, because the YS is heavier than the Saito. My elevators and stab are 3/8" balsa, so that will add a little weight back there over the stock setup. But I like a rearward CG.
Thanks for the input!

You could always move the battery back -- I don't like it beneath the tank.
After I did that, the plane is quite tail heavy and will constantly go skywards at below 1/3 throttle. This is either upright or inverted.

Hmmm....
Now you've got me thinking. Do you suppose, since I have the heavier tail feathers, that I could move the battery back to just in front of the throttle & rudder servos and come out ok on the CG?
I like to be slightly tail heavy, but I don't like to pitch up at low throttle when the tank starts getting low on fuel.
I was hoping that I could move the tank back to the CG, but there is no room. Tank placement isn't critical with YS engines.
And then on the other hand... that's a really long fuselage, so it wouldn't take much lead in the rear to make a big difference. Maybe just a heavy rubber tail wheel would do it.
Maybe I should just tape it all together tonight and put it on the CG machine.
So you like yours, huh? I can't wait! I went with transparent purple and yellow Ultracote, with solid yellow on the leading edge of the wing, stab, fin, and part of the fuselage.
Thanks!
