So,
hovering means to be just 'standing' in the air, right? That means the only thing that holds the plane up is the thrust of the propeller/engine? Okey, now is nowadys every engine on the market capable of hovering, does is create enough thrust to keep it's weight+plus the weight of the recommended airplane up? How about a Cox .010 does this tiny little engine have enough thrust to hover, if it would be mounted on a tiny little 3d plane? :-)
thx bye bye

yes, as long as the thrust to weight ratio is greater than 1:1, a Cox .010 will make a plane hover.
btw, that would be a tiny aircraft indeed

But ideally you want a 2 to 1 power to weight ratio. So on your .010 let's say it puts out 3 lbs of thrust you would put that engine in something that weighs 1.5 lbs including that engine.
Good luck!

50% nitro with a 10x8 zinger with a ported and polished carb... I have no idea!!! I haven't messed with an engine that small since I was 12 and trying to see how I could mount it to my bike cause my parents didn't want me having any motorized vehicle.

You dont have to have a 2:1 thrust to weight for a plane to hover. 1:1 will hover. 1.00000001:1 will hover and pull out. Idealy anything over 1.2:1 will allow you to hover and pullout with some speed. Anyway, it is possible for a cox .010 to hover a plane, but It would have to be a very small plane indeed.

No, you are correct... you don't need a 2 to 1 ratio. However "ideally" this is what you want. I have a 90-Funtana and with a YS 1.20 swinging a 16x6 APC and a Extreme Flight Yak with a YS 1.10 same prop. I can hover both at about half throttle and when I jam that throttle stick fwd the plane rockets out. I have flown a friend's 46 U-can-do with a Saito .72 and another friend's homebuilt with even less power. I try to hover those, but FOR ME it's pretty dicey having very little power left to pull out. The original thread started with polish smiley asking about hovering tips and if the Cox could do it. But I also would hate to see this person spend time and money on something he might later want to replace. It's just my opinion, but I always try to do things the right way once so I'm not later kicking myself. But in the same breath you are correct about not needing 2 to 1.

Hi Folks,
I'm new to 3-d and just amazed at all the things some people can do with these airplanes. I have been doing a little research on the net trying to find out more info on the "How to's" of 3-d flying, but not coming up with much. I was wondering if there are any web sites or videos out there regarding this.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks to everybody so far with the help. WOW!!! that flying on that video Ultimate 3-D is CRAZY!!! I'm gonna have to get that! Are you flying in any competitions this year cause I would come out to see you fly like that anytime. And what plane is that you are using (the red, white, and blue one) cause it looks like that plane is a blast to fly. And what motor are you using for that as well?
Thanks
How stupid do you and hovermaster think people on here are. Heres another one of your posts.

I have to shout out a plug here for my video becasue we talk specifically about engine choices and the actual Hovering maneuver. But ideally you want a 2 to 1 power to weight ratio. So on your .010 let's say it puts out 3 lbs of thrust you would put that engine in something that weighs 1.5 lbs including that engine.

spratbo starts a question so hovermaster can respond and plug his video. The video is in fact produced by spratbro according to him. One then may come to the conclusion they know each other.
What kind of crap are you two trying to pull.
I got news for you the 3du videos at flying cirkus are better
Edited to remove plug for commercial video in quoted text.

Listen... I used this as a way to get the word out originally to start interest in the web site. Sorry if you feel "duped", but the fact of the matter is this has worked for now. As far as a banner ad, I am working on that right now and very shortly that will be in place along with the video in stores nation wide as well as magazine reviews from 3-D Flyer, RC Modeler, Model Airplane News, and ofcourse RCU. But don't try to diss my video when YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!! For what it's worth, every single person I have showed this to has made comments like "I really learned a lot from this" and "this is the best RC video I have even seen". Think about what is motivating you to say what you are saying... who are you helping by "downing" another person? Would you like me to GIVE you a copy? If I do that and you can promise me you and your UNBIASED friends would look at it with an open mind I might be coaxed inoto sending you one. But you would have to promise if you thought it was alright that in every post you would carry my web site address and help promote it.
Think about it..
John
PS... wasn't that good advice though
