I'm looking for a 40 or 60 to fly 3D and learn some pattern. I got a Saito 82 for Xmas. Is there a good durable airplane that you can learn both with?

There might be a plane out there in that size that can do both but I doubt it does both very well, perhaps someone else can chime in if they know of one.

The .82 would be a great match to a UCD 3D .46 or a Funtana .40, both fly nice but are quite different in their habits and capabilities. The Venus has a thin wing and really does it's best stuff at higher speeds, pattern flying is it's forte' but 3D is asking a bit much of the design.

It can prophang for sure, but dunno if its well suited to all out 3d, the wing is thinner than most as you'd expect on a pattern plane (which is what this was designed for)

The venus is definitely NOT a 3D plane. It is very fast, and precise, more like a pattern ship. The surfaces are very small. I had one with a OS 46 in it, it ripped. It would not prop hang, but that is not what that plane is for.

Bad choice if you are thinking 3D anything.


The Ucandos are good for 3D but not anything else. The surfaces are so large and the wing so thick that there is no precision and if you don't manage throttly you will flutter.


Not sure what is good in that class. The UCD is a fun plane to fly.

A Venus CAN indeed prophang but not on an OS 46, you need an Irvine .53, OS 50 SX or simular engines. Of course it is not what it is meant to do but anything can prophang with enough power

I HAD a Venus 40 with a Saito 72 in it. It is NOT a 3D machine. Great pattern and sport plane though. The UCANDO would be a much better choice.

I agree, the Venus cannot 3D! I have a Saito 72 in mine and it will hover but doesn't have enough tail authority to hover for long and won't torque roll or anything like that. If you input too much elevator at any speed it will snap out. It will fly slowly but will not Harrier. Great pattern ship though!! This was my first glow model after learning on electrics and I was amazed by how it flys and lands. Just like a foamie (only faster). If you want a 3D ship look at the Ucando, Matrix, or the Fliton Extra 330. My buddy had the Funtana 40 and it flys 3D OK but really rocks in a Harrier badly, not good for learning 3D in my opinion.

Actually ther ei a 40 sized airplane that will do both. The GP Ultra Sport 40+ . It's a kit however, an evolution of the original Ultra Sport with a different wing profile and enlarged control surfaces. Wonderfull airplane, I'm going to have to build another!
