I'm trying to decide what engine to put on my new CA Models 31% Extra 300L, there specs call for a finished weight of 17 to 20 pounds, has a 93" span and calls for a 45 to 80 cc engine. I'm looking at the ZDZ 60 and ZDZ 80, seems the 80 might be a bit much for that weight. Would the ZDZ 60 give me unlimited vertical? Any other engines I should look at in this size?

I put the one Marcelo Columbo, the C in CA Models, had at Joe Nall on the scale. It was 22.4 lb with a 3W 70. So 17 to 20 isn't going to happen. The ZDZ 80 is the better choice.

Hey Mark, what is the kit like ? I think I saw the 80" one at Toledo beside Fibreclassics. I assume its built up wing? Hows the cowl and canopy quality? Was just at their site, might have to email them.

I really like the looks of the kit, the fuse is all laser cut and looks very easy to assemble. The wings are foam, they come presheeted with balsa. The tail is just like the wing, foam already sheeted, you just have to glue on the leading and trailing edges. The rudder and fin, elevators and stab, wing and ailerons all come as one piece and you have to cut the control surfaces off and cap with balsa. The cowl and canopy in my kit look really good. I did see a 34% canopy at dayton this weekend that was wavy but the guys from planesplus replaced it with a better one. I'm really eager to start on this but I have another project on the table that I have to finish first.

Mark,
When you build and fly your 330L - assuming you do so in the next 12 months or so, please post a quick review. I saw the 30 and 34% kits at Dayton - it was all I could do NOT to buy one. They look nice.
I'm looking for another big plane - have been looking at Carden kits, and these from Planes Plus. The guy at Dayton said he sold 60 or so kits in about four hours at Toledo this year.
Carden kits seem to be king (at least east of the Mississipi River) - but you have to build a LOT more in a Carden kit - and Carden kits are about $200 to $300 more.
These Planes plus kits look nice, look light, and come pre-sheeted. Looks like all you have to do is build the fuse, cover it, and drop in your radio. Just short of an ARC type kit.
Would be interested in kit/flying opinions from other who have already built and flown them - specifically what engine, and vertical - 3d performance.
Thanks.

Doug,
I'm looking at this and the Aerotech. Right now I'm leaning to the Aerotech, mostly because it has a removable stab.(this is my third 80" and am running out of room) If I go with the CA Models plane I will post for sure. Mark

When I get it done i'll post a quick review of it. I picked mine up at dayton last weekend. A friend of mine also picked up a 34%, I wasn't really looking at buying one but he was drooling over them when I got there. After I saw how easy they are to build, and how nice they look I just had to have one myself. He flew the 31% Extra they had there at Dayton and said it flew great, would hover at about 1/3 throttle, I believe it had a 70cc on it.

Don at Planes Plus bought the models that Marcelo brought to Joe Nall. That's probably the one he had at Dayton. If so it had a 3W 70 in it.
As to how they fly, it's basically a copy of the AeroWorks 300L with all the lightening holes already in it. That should tell you enough about how it will 3D.
The listed weights are a bit optimistic. The 31% was 22.4 lb. The 27% was 14 lb with a Moki 2.1.

Hey guys, this past Saturday I had the pleasures of flying the 31% Extra. It was the exact plane you see on their site, the one with the blue canopy. He has a 3W70 on it and it was an amazing performer. After seeing what this plane can do I plan to order a 27% for my BME44.

It good to hear that the 31% is a good flyer. I've got a BME50 looking for a new home. I was thinking about the GP Extra300S ARF, but I'm not sure if this engine is a good choice for that plane. So now I'm leaning toward an Aerowerks 29% Edge or the CA 27% Extra. It sounds like the CA Extra is an excellent kit with the wing sheeted for you, but the Aerowerks has a great reputation for being a great flyer.
It's too bad rcsuperstore raised their prices on these planes. Since Planes Plus is a hour away, I may have to run down there and take a look at the CA Extra when I can find the time.

Anyone have any info on the 34% Extra? I've got a ZDZ-80 twin that needs a home. What's the wing area? What does this plane typically weigh and with which motors? Does a light motor need lead in the nose, servos on pull-pull or both?
Went to the website and they sure look good.

The 34% just came into the US in time for the Dayton show. So there are not any flying here yet. Considering the advertised weight for the 31% as 17 to 20, with a actual measured weight of 22.4, adjust weight for the 34% accordingly.

Yesterday, I picked up the 34% Extra fron Don at Planes Plus. It's got a big cowl, 12 inches wide. Should be easy to fit a twin. Don toured me through the shop. Boy has he got some way-cool motorcycles...some seriously-fast exotic racebikes.

What are the wings like Diablo? How was the canopy? I'm also considering ordering this plane, 34%. Any other comments to push me over the edge appreciated. Does it used a braced rudder fin?

I really don't have any good info because I haven't opened the box up. The web instructions say it requires tail wires. It should be a very quick-building plane. I checked out a wing for the 31% and it looked good. The kit is less $ than an Aeroworks or Carden of similar size, saves you a lot of work with the pre-sheeted wing, stab, rudder, turtledeck, and has to come out lighter because of the extensive laser cut lightening holes. Jump in, the water's fine.
