I have a Ohio R/C Giles 300. Thinking of using a Moki 2.1 for the engine. I would like to use a lighter engine, but will it pull out of a hover?
Here is the plane info:
Wing span: 76”
Wing area: 1100 sq in.
Weight (with Moki): just under 15 pounds (including fuel)
The Moki 1.8 is only 4 oz lighter, but the OS 1.60 weights about a pound less. How is the throttle response of the Moki?
Wing loading with the Moki will be about 31 oz/sq ft. With the OS, 29 oz/sq ft.
What engine would you use to get 3-D performance from this plane?
Thanks for the help,
Jim

I had an OS 160 in a 13lb plane. It had unlimited vertical but was nothing to write home about.
I'm sure the moki 1.80 would give better vertical. If your main goal is 3-D power the 2.10 would be a better choice.
But you might want to consider gas, ZDZ has a new 50 on the way. There are also other good ones. I have the zdz40 in a 16lb plane and it will become a dot in the sky in short order. Plus the smaller gas engine are not that much heavier than the 2.10 and don't use near the fuel.
This is just my opinion.

Lower wing loading is better, all things considered, so long as the engine has the vertical you desire.
Going to gas just because of better fuel consumption is not necessarily good, with the greater associated wing loading.

Use the biggest glo engine that will give you a wing loading of 28 oz./sq. ft. or less. I have a 15 lb. DP Extra with the 2.10.
